It can be very difficult to ID wood from a picture. Kind of looks like Macassar ebony to me. What does it smell like? |

Well it smells very sweet, kind of like what I would imagine a rosewood to smell like. It is more floral smelling not sweet candyish like snakewood. O I noticed that I loaded more pictures. In that web page you can view previous pictures in that album. There you will additional pictures of my so called brazilian rosewood. |

Yes, I agree, Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia Nigra). Not a very good grade, but will look interesting once finished. |

The lighter pink areas will oxidize into the signature red orange of Brazilian rosewood over time. |

If you scratch and sniff, Brazillian will most definately smell like hundred dollar bills. |

Hi Robbie, Being new to this forum, I don't want to step on anyone's toes, however, I wanted to send you a note so badly last night, I nearly had a heart attack waiting for the membership approval! Anyway, just that little snapshot looks to me like it could be Mun Ebony. (pronounced moon) To find out if it is truely Brazillian, take a little sand paper, and scuff a corner. If it comes up smelling like "Bubble Gum", it is Brazillian. I had the honor of helping to grade thru and handle about a meter of Brazillian R. wood a few years ago when the tonewood company that I worked for got a pallet in. I did not see anything that looked quite like your picture, but every piece is different. Good luck with your id. woodwitch1 "Experience,.. is the greatest teacher of all." I've had some BRW that looked similar to that (but without that much sap wood). Also looks something like some Ziricote that I've had. |

That's a four-piece back, right? The outer two pieces look like BRW to me. As for the center two, they could be BRW. |

Sure looks like Ziricote to me. Are the photos pretty close to the actual color? |

Hi all, Thank you for the warm welcome!! The picture that I have posted here is a close up of a 2 pc Mun Ebony back. You can barely see the sides. The color is washed out because of the florescent lights with the flash. It is actually identical in color to John's "Brazillian". Has John attempted the scratch test? Of course that will be the real test won't it. Woodwitch |

I suppose I could have got away with a 3 piece, but I wanted the sap center so I bookmatched a sap piece for the center part. The color is pretty accurate maybe a little darker in person. Robbie |

Although, years of fantastic fumes may have altered my sense of smell. Robbie |

I wouldn't describe the smell of BRW as "bubblegum" at all. To me it's a sweet chocolatey smell with spicey overtones - very moreish (not like bubblegum!). I guess like color, we all have slightly different variations in our senses! Cheers, Dave F. |

It's either Ziricote, or it's off to a fancy dress party dressed as Ziricote. Does it have any fishscaling? Colin |

That is Brazilian rosewood no question about it. It is similar in character to Brazilian rosewood imported in the mid to late 1980's. The pink/purple streaks will, over time, oxidize to a light chocolate brown. Stephen |

anyone wanna take a stab at how much a board 48"l by 1/2 by 7" costs? O it had some serious checks in the middle of the board. |
