One of my next door neighbor's trees lost a huge limb in the wind today. It came down across my front drive, blocking my car, but luckily only the foliage hit the car, so no damage. The question is, what kind of tree is this? Anyone know? Any good for soundboards? It's a very old tree and the branch may just be thick enough for soundboards (maybe ukes?). At the very least it should be good for bracing, right? I can post the high-res version of the picture/s later if need be. Attachment: CIMG2765s.JPG Attachment: CIMG2766s.JPG Cheers, Dave F. |

A close up of the leaves and bark will likely be a big help. Rob |

Red pine maybe. You are gonna have to key it out, Dave. White pine has needles in bundles of 5. I don't see that here. |

It is look like it could be digger or scotch pine Dark brown bark digger grey brown scotch. Doubt it is red or white pine he is in Cal. Western white has different bark. |

Ah, yes Kirby, reaction wood.....I know all about that....just didn't think about it. This branch leaned out almost horizontally (it gave some nice shade from the hot summer sun), so I guess it's not going to be much use for anything except maybe turned bowls (that will bend out of shape, but never mind). I really am clueless about which trees grow in this area (apart from ye olde redwoods of course!). I guess this should be a wake up call for me to learn a bit more about it.... Cheers for now, Dave F. |
