Post subject:  Any interest in QS Red Oak from split "billets"

Hey all,

I recently happened upon a huge red oak stump cutoff at a local woodyard.... It was about 5' diameter.... The center was rotten, so they cut off that end and dumped it on the ground.

I split off a bunch of blocks that look like they have potential as guitar sets.... My goal is to make up a bunch of QS guitar sets from split billets (The same way you would process a Spruce tree into tops) -- to take advantage of the better properties that come from air dried, split out stock

I have built 1 guitar so far out of QS red oak, and like it quite a bit as a back and sides wood.. It is the easiest bending side wood I have ever used.

I have a feeling that this will end up being too much wood for me, and I want to know if anyone on here would be interested in some... So far, it is mostly un-figured, pure-quartersawn Red oak... Heartwood is a very nice, dark red color... Sapwood is spalted/punky and will probably have to come off.

I am still a while off (6-months to a year) -- it is currently very green/wet... Probably been sitting on the ground at the wood yard for 3 months or so...

I will try to post some pix of the blocks when I get home tonight.

Thanks

John

Here's some pix of the oak in question.

I need to go back out and find a stump suitable for sides -- The stump I got was only 26" long...

I will have to see how much I can get out... There are some sections that appear to have pinholes from some sort of bug or another...

Those big slabs are giant -- I really should have split them in half to fit in the jeep... I estimate right at 150 lbs each.

Thanks

John

They may end up going into the fire -- Oak is fine stuff in the smoker... Spring is coming, and I am getting a hankering for Smoked Ribs!

The success of turning it into "Tonewood" all depends on what I find when I open them up further (Those giant slabs won't ever dry unless I split them down to 1" to 2" thick slabs)..... Termites and their ilk will go into the fire.

Thanks

John
