I have a coat of shellac on my guitar and am ready to start the finishing process. What I would like to do is to grain fill with Z-Poxy. I understand that Z-Poxy does not do well over shellac. Could I spray vinyl sealer over the shellac and proceed to grain fill from there? Anyone have experience with this?

Yes, you can and it works quite well. Make sure the shellac has dried thoroughly for 2 weeks because the vinyl sealer and Z-poxy will prevent the alcohol solvent from escaping. Next time, shoot the bare wood with vinyl sealer first.

If you are using a catalyzed top coat then you will need to add the same catalyzed hardener to the vinyl sealer to retain compatibility.

Tim, thank you. Yes, the shellac has been on over a month. Top coat will be nitro. I didn't have any vinyl sealer at the time and the weather was doing some threatening humidity shifts so I went with the shellac. This helps a lot.

Fillipo, this is good to know. I am off to search for Todd Stock's finish schedule (that is, after a visit to the deli) - you got me hungry there!! I'll let you know if I don't find it. Thanks!!
