I got to figure out how to make this stuff. Any ideas? Will probably have to use the tiny herringbone and split off one side, but how to make the center part?

Hans...check out Frankie Montuoro's website. One of his passions is building guitars in the spirit and tradition of Larson. Frankie used to post here but has been gone for some time. I second JJ's suggestion. I have met Frankie and he is a super great young man. Devoted to restoring Larson instruments and building lovely instruments of his own. I, too, would be happy if he joined in here more often. |

Haans, I suggest that you e-mail Don Druckenbrodt (Nite Owl Guitars don@niteowlguitars.com). He brought back to life an old harp guitar made by the Larson brothers with a very similar purfling scheme. He documented the restoration here and although they don't appear to be there now, at one stage I saw a series of photos on how he analysed the purfling and made up new stuff. |

Seems to me it would be just like making up something like wheat. Layer it up in logs, cut them on the bias and re glue into a new log. Cut strips. Pretty simple really. In this case though, you might use wood pieces rather than layers of veneer, and keep the side grain in the picture when cutting up and re gluing. The advantage of this would be that you don't have to cut strips and glue them together to get the arrows. |

Yea, not so bad...thought about it a while, got some holly and redheart and came up with this...     Need to refine it a bit, little thinner on the ebony and redheart, bit longer on the large length of holly, and thinner in width of the strips.

Joe, we have a 3' hose hooked up to the laundry tubs. I just shove a length of herringbone up the hose and turn on the hot water to a good trickle. Wait 5-10 min and split with a new utility knife blade. Split from right to left. Tell ya what, you make 'em and I'll buy 'em from you! Seriously, I think it's going to be like doing abalone with the teflon...Looks like I forgot a couple of black lines. Thanks for the input guys! |

Thanks Steve! Layed up another block and had to dash back down and add some 'cause I forgot the single brb alternating with the long w and the brbwbrbrbwbrb...say what? We'll see if I got it right tomorrow. |

Thanks guys! I tried again, but struck out again. So I did some serious measuring, thinking, and extrapolating and came up with some (hopefully) more realistic numbers. Glue up a big log today... 2' x 2". That ought to make a few sets.   The closeup shows the addition of the black lines (too large), the single brb, and the backstrip from the first try. So, tomorrow I'll try the third attempt, guess at worst, it will be mighty detailed compared to the first two attempts. |

Now, now, no fighting boys! OK, I'm goin' with this...(top purfling).  Maybe a little more angle (easily done). I was aiming for 1/4" and It's .255". Center strip with black lines is .060", so the teflon set on edge will work. I've got that oak parlor ready for rosette, so maybe I'll have a pretty fancy oak parlor! |
