Howdy all
I`m working on building my binding jig today and am wondering if I should degrease the slides before I assemble it.
My thinking is that if there is no grease, then the dust won`t build up on the roller bearings in as much as the grease/oil would tend to attract more dust and eventually interfere with the operation of the arm.
Any thoughts?
I know enough to blow things clean with compressed air.

My second question...
Has anyone set the drawer slides at an angle so that the arm will travel to the rear or home position when released, such as a radial arm saw will do?
I know that the mounting plate for the trimmer will have to be adjusted in order to keep the trimmer perpendicular to the table, and it will also have to swing into the upmost position via spring pull.
Any more thoughts?

Coe,

question 1: Dust shouldn't be an issue for these bearings unless you store the unit in the exhaust of your RAS.:)

question 2: The last thing you need is your router bit dragging across the top or back of your instrument because you had to grab the phone or a ham sandwich and let go for a second. On the other hand, it would be an interesting engineering feat to keep the router base plane parallel to the bench while keeping the extending arm at an angle great enough to create a gravity return. Its late, maybe I'm not visualizing this scenario properly?

Let us know if you build it. Conceptually, it is interesting.

Chris, how did you know where I plan to store it? ;)
I was really referring to the long term situation on the bearings and have already decided to clean them so that dust will be not quite as likely to hang in there where the blower will not blow.
As far as the angle on the drawer slides, the router will be raised when released via spring tension, not dragging on the workpiece.
I also have an idea on how to figure the angle.
Actually, I had planned on having this jig made up and almost ready to try out today, but life and obligations took over the weekend.
Now that I`ve had the weekend to think and plan, I have a good grasp on it.

Keep things level and square ,don't add angles that can complicate squaring up your router. I have used my jig for 3 yeas , never cleaned the grease out of the bearings and don't have any issues. It is as smooth as can be.

Coe...don't over think this. I selected drawer slides that close positively and stay closed until they are pulled...they won't just open easily on their own. After 3 years I have never greased, nor even cleaned my slides...they just keep sliding. Keep everything straight and parallel and you will be rewarded!

There is very little to improve on this design (except my snazzy compression grippers for holding the body ;) ). KISS and all of that. :)

Btw, if you pursue this, you will find that your binding channels are not perpendicular to tos and bottoms
