Work on my first build. My neck blank is sapele and the blank isn't big enough to get the stacked heel and the heel block for the bolt on neck. My question, does the heel block and the neck need to be the same material??? I have a nice piece of hard maple that I could laminate up for a heel bock.

Thoughts and thank from a "Clueless builder"

Can use whatever wood want and can laminate. Some use food grade baltic birch. I use this now on tailblocks and get it from hobby lobby. I am going to start doing my neck blocks from this also. If have a hardwood store nearby can get a block to make some plates fairly reasonable. Wouldn't need a huge billit. Know a great guy uses spruce for both blocks and after several hundred guitars by a bunch, never a problem. Makes guitar light and think adds to tone, but the tone thing can be subjective.
