Post subject:  Can you scrape zipflex?

I'm doing a rosette on my next guitar right now. It's consisting of a BWB strip in one channel, a thin zipflex strip in a second channel, and a BWB strip in a 3rd channel. I decided to inlay the zipflex strip first, and it seems it actually sits a tiny bit out of the channel I routed for it. Is it safe to scrape this flush, Or do I need to sand it? Also, should I inlay the BWB strips before or after this is done? They'll need to be trimmed up also, but I know I can scrape them. Thanks.

Yes, you can. I inlay Zipflex (using CA glue) so that it lies proud of the wood by about 4 or 5 mil, then use a freshly sharpened scraper to cut it clean with the wood surface. I checked the cross section of Zipflex before I did this to make sure the shell layers were thick enough, and they are, with plenty of margin.

I would inlay everything including any bwb purfling before scraping/sanding, personally.

Cheers,
Dave F.

That surprises me. Good to know, but not sure I would do that.
