Hello, I'm building a OLF small jumbo and I'm a wondering the correct grain orientation for the neck block, Cumpiano says horizontal, however the neck block in the book is larger than what is drawn on my plans. Also the small jumbo neck block on my plans looks like two pieces, how does the grain run on the top piece? Thanks, Rob |

Hi Rob, I generally try to avoid having a glue joint with an end grain surface. That basically leaves only one 'correct' grain orientation (horizontal). Christian |

I run the grain in the same direction as the side wood. If you have conflicting grain , you run the risk of side distortion and cracking . Martin used the configuration for almost 200 years , |

Not to mention (and those above are the most important considerations) that sanding & shaping from the end grain is way rediculously difficult. I made this mistake once. Never again. Mike |
