Post subject:  End Pin Installation Timing

I just want to check an assumption (you know why they say "never assume"). At the Montreal guitar show I noticed that most of the guitars did not have strap or end pins installed. I didn't ask, but figured this was to allow the eventual buyer to choose where they wanted the strap button or perhaps an end pin was not installed in case the buyer might want a pick-up and would therefore want a strap jack installed. Is this correct? If so, I further assume that installation of these items is included with the purchase price after the guitar has been sold and the buyer has stated their wishes. Is this right?

Thanks,
Pat

I put an end pin only if asked.

There are differing points of view ...

One store I dealt with didnt want them ... they said they have customers who dont play standing up, and dont want any extra holes in the guitar.

I usually only add a heel pin if I put a pickup in, and that of course takes care of the end pin. For what they cost on thier own, I add them if the customer wants the pickup, or just two plain strap pins.

I normally use endpins from Larrivee, but I make sure the customer wants one. It uses a 1/2" hole so if they add a pickup later there's nothing to drill or ream. Most of my customers are bluegrassers who play standing. Most don't have pickups.
