hoi, I am dealing with a 77 precision bass and the owner wants the worn places on the fretboard lacquered, just like the rest of the neck where the lacquer is still on. It's this typical worthless (I know, taste) milkish lacquer that chips of after a while. Does anyone know how to match this 'colour', from MIMF sanding sealer was suggested but that's way too clear compared to the lacquer that's on. Anyone found the right formula? thanks, Mario |

I don't think that is nitrocellulose. Not sure what it is, but Fender had discoloration issues with its finishes throughout the early to mid 70's. Maybe an acrylic. Matching only the worn spots is the kind of job to seriously consider turning down. It would be a problem even on an old nitro lacquer fretboard, because of the grunge on the bare wood spots, and the color matching. The usual on maple is to replace the frets and refinish the whole board. |
