Post subject: | Top is separating from rim. Glue? |
Hi all, A friend's guitar was dropped (twice). The first resulted in a 2" spot where it looked mostly cosmetic and the binding appeared to have separated a little. I saw the guitar again last night and he said it was dropped a second time, only this time there is roughly an 8" section where the top has separated from the rim. I'm no repair person so I told him to take it in. It is only a year or two old so he thinks warranty might still be an option. If it isn't he isn't worried about the finish aspect but wants to fix it so the lifting stops growing. I told him I might be able to help with that. What type of glue would you use in this situation? I haven't used HHG, but I have a hunch that it might be the top suggestion. I was thinking CA or titebond. Any help? Sorry the pic isn't great - took it with a phone at worship practice last night. EDIT: Guitar is a Laguna and he bought the Guitar Center warranty if it matters. |

If you can get Titebond spread evenly between the top and the kerfed lining - maybe with a thin pallete knife - I would start there. Add clamping pressure and let it cure. You should also try to get as much of the existing dried glue removed from those surfaces as you can without removing any of the wood before you re-glue it. CA would probably hold fine, but would destroy the finish - assuming lacquer - if you get a little sloppy and would be more likely to wick through to the inside and look bad unless you used the really thick kind. I just like the better control I get with Titebond and it cleans off of the finish nicely. Chuck |

Thanks Chuck, it sounds like I could handle that. I'll go with titebond and stay away from CA. Any other tips or tricks out there? |

Sure would be nice to know what type of glue the guitar was originally put together with. Make sure you clean off all the old glue as suggested, remember titebond will not adhere to cured titebond or other glues. Chuck |

I'll see if I can't find out what type of glue was used and will definitely make sure to remove old glue. Thanks a bunch! |

What? Sorry to add a non sequitor, but does guitar center sell a warranty that includes damage cause by negligence? I am really curious. |

I doubt it but he was going to ask since he bought the extra warranty - don't know about GC but these usually cover more than a factory warranty - even no questions asked sometimes. |

Chuck If it's a factory guitar, it's a safe bet the glue used was Titebond or equivelent. |
