Thanks for another great video Robbie. I have an older version of this tool and the indexing pin supplied is tapered on one end and straight on the other - I've never known why. Can you solve this mystery for me? Cheers Pete |

Very nice! The children do love to help in the shop. All that cutting can be a drag. It is a good idea to have some apprentice labor for that part! |

Thanks Robbie! I've got that jig since I don't have a tablesaw and have no plans on getting one. I'll be using it soon, so this toot is timely! ![]() |

Can you solve this mystery for me? Cheers Pete Pete, Here is some info that will answer your question. The older version of the LMI manual fret slotting jig used to use a template for the scale that had horseshoe shaped indentions that the pin would be inserted into. If you used the tapered end of the pin it would fit snuggly in the slot. If you used the straight end of the pin you would have .0125 of slop or wiggle room between the pin and the slot of the template. This would allow you to shift the fretboard and template that amount to compensate when cutting the nut slot. To learn more about compensation you can go here http://www.lmii.com/CartTwo/Intonation.htm Nowadays the templates all have v shaped indentions cut in them so you want to use the tapered side of the pin. If you use the straight side or non tapered side of the pin it is fine but will eventually wear the template a bit. Hope this helps. |

Robbie, I've been scratching my head over this for a good ten years, but figured it wasn't a big deal. Thanks for clearing it up once and for all! Cheers Pete |
