I've got a couple of boards from my sister - who had a previous life in luthiery.....she doesn't remember what it is or where she got it. I thought it was a species of mahogany - now I'm not so sure. Density is 7.47 grams per cubic inch. High tech scale pictured below. Several other pictures - I cut part of it for a neck blank, based on the mahogany assumption. Cutting with the band saw gave me a different perspective, as it was considerably harder than some very old Honduran Mahogany that I have. As you can see from the pix (hope the quality is sufficient) there are pores, although perhaps not as uniformly as in Honduran. Thanks, all!! |

Looks a lot like Honduran to me...some of that stuff from the center of the tree is really dense. That part of the tree usually has little white flecks or deposits in the pores. Trev |

Looks like some nice wood there Corky! It's hard to say without having in hand to feel the weight and get a sniff. My guess would be T'zalam (Lysiloma spp.) which is often referred to as Mayan Walnut. Usually this wood is more of a sandy blonde/brown and is a bit harder/heavier than Black Walnut. everyone’s graphic card will display color warmth slightly different. so it makes it real hard to judge based on color. The pore structure is just moderately open from what I can see persimmon was the first thing that came to my mind. Attachment: Persimmon.jpg

Does the wood have any distinct odor,or smell? I'm leaning with Howard as an Acacia . Or African Mahogany. mc |

Thanks all..... Lots of help - I guess if I was expecting unanimity of response, I was foolishly optimistic  But you gave me a few responses that have helped a lot.As for Koa, or a type of Acacia, I just happen to have a guitar here that I made out of Koa, and if I view the side of the piece, it does have a similar appearance. I got thrown by the flatsawn nature of it. A lot different than the figured Koa I have. As to smell....... it actually has a faint smell of black walnut, without the earthy "barnyard" smell that I get from black walnut. But same family (of smell). |

My first thought was African Mahogany (Khaya rather than Sapele) and the more I look the more that is what it looks like to me. And it can have the appearance and texture of Honduran but be "harder". At least that is what I found when I recently processed a couple board feet into guitar necks. Shane |
