| Post subject: | Making a Florentine Cutaway |
Thinking of making my next OM build a Florentine cutaway and dont see any good posts or instructions for doing so. Someone recommended I susscibe to Sylvan Wells site which I did and his one article really suggests sawing the cutaway with band saw after boy is built - seems like an ok way to convert a guitar but not for making from scratch and using same wood, etc. Any advice on where I can go for directions? |

Todd, Thanks for the photos - which of course brings more questions and requests. 1) Can you provide a photo of what you've built to bend your cutaways with your Fox bender please? I've made something - but am always looking for some better ideas/methods. I saw a photo of Kevin Ryan's small cutaway bending jig - which is pretty unassuming and brilliant - and now would love to see yours. 2) Do you bind the tip of your cutaway. I'm remembering a thread where someone showed how they made a perfect mitered joint at the tip of the cutaway - but yours looks like it will make a butt joint - and am wondering what you do. Thanks |

I used to use a cutaway mold like that for the fox .. but you do have some unsupported parts of the bend, only relying on the waist bar to hold the backside firm against your slats ... since I made this about a year ago or so, its been absolutely painless ... based on John How's bender mod spring loaded arms (I now use this on upper bout bends in the full fox config as well) - dubbed "the hulk" by one of my students, and OLF member Rick Cowan. i use a 5x12 2.5 watt blanket, full blast, and the bend takes about two minutes .. the top slat is screwed into the back of the solid form, so the tension on the slat increase as the bend comes around - bends binding and side purf as well just as easy |

Todd, thanks for expanding - makes it much more clear. Thinking I might set up a practice with junk wood as good starting point. Tony - thanks for sharing that simple jig - think even i could master that - with some practice. Thanks again guys. |

Thanks for the pics and descriptions, guys. How do you like to make the little wedge block for the cutaway point (interior block, not the binding)? I've done one and it turned out okay but it was hard to get a good fit and kind of awkward to handle a small piece like that. |

I have also built with a bound Florentine tip (With a three way mitre ) . Using a side purfling like I have here makes it a little tricky to have everything line up .
