Post subject:  Parlor Plans?

I have a question about parlor plans.

LMI is selling one of the Scott Antes Plans
http://www.lmii.com/CartTwo/thirdproduc ... cott+Antes

Does anyone have an pics of guitars built with these plans?

He seems to have two different parlor plans out there, a "6 string small concert parlor" and the "1885 Bruno" plan. I am trying to figure out which plans LMI is selling. http://www.pilgrimsprojects.biz/guitar.html

I could just call them, but I am sure someone here has probably built one.

I believe the 1885 Bruno is a plan for a gut/nylon string, ladder braced guitar...

I think the Small Concert parlor is an X-braced Steel string plan...

My guess is that this plan is the small X-braced steel string... but I would call them to make sure.

To throw a wrench into the works... He also has a small "Tenor" ladder braced guitar plan as well!

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks

John

GAL has plans for a small-bodied Martin drawn by the late Ted Davis. I think but am not sure it would be considered a parlor.

Brock,
I have the LMI plan. Is there anything you need to know about it? It is definitely an X braced plan.

Brock, I'm surprised you just can't make your own plan. Maybe get a tracing of one and the measurements is all I would think you would need. You probably are going to do your own thing with the bracing anyway.

The Ted Davis plans at GAL are for a Martin 1-18 .. X braced, single tone bar, 12 fret, 24 7/8 scale - definitely a parlour (though I consider anything 0 or smaller a parlour)

Brock...I've made 2 from a modified Antes plan. Sitka over Cherry and Redwood over Walnut. Here's the latter http://www.donohueguitars.com/component/content/article/40-available-guitar-models/96-parlor-guitar

I can, I have been waffling between making my own and modifying an existing body shape.

Yeah, I saw that... I need something definitely smaller than an 0.

I've made several from the same Antes plan as JJ. They are pretty much a Martin size 2. I used a 24.9 scale and a double tenon bolt-on carbon reinforced neck. I splayed the X a little more and lengthened the bridge to around 6.5". Modified the brace dimensions a little. They are great little guitars. Here's a link to one with a sound clip.

I made this video a few years ago. I hesitate to show it, it has so many mistakes, but it is from the antes plan AGP-01. It has a bit throatier sound in the treble than the Kennedy sample for some reason.

Brock --

I have (my own) plans for an 1840's Ashborn. Not a Martin -- a 11 1/2" lower bout/ 17 3/4" length/ 24.5" scale. The bracing is a modification of the original narrow X. I've made 3 or 4, the first wasn't too successful so I widened the X bracing. The later ones were much nicer with the typical Parlor sweetness, response, and low volume.

For those who don't know about Ashborn, it was a highly successful factory near modern Torrington, CT, making banjos and guitars in the first half of the nineteenth century. Ashborn held patents on a number of instrument-related products, including a very cool friction tuner. The Civil War must have affected business, Ashborn himself was elected to Congress (as a strong supporter of abolition and Federalism), and the factory closed. Many of the features of early Martins are also found on Ashborn guitars -- as to which came first, I'm not qualified to say.
