Happy New Year to all OLFers!!! :D

I thought that it might be fun to learn what New Years resolutions our fellow OLFers may have. Mine is to build more with good old EIRW since I have only built with it a couple of times before and to perhaps build for the first time with a great tonewood that I have been reluctant to use for allergy reasons - cocobolo.

What's your guitar building related New Years resolution? :)

2010 will be a short building year, as I'll be away from the shop until mid July, starting January 10.

After that, I resolve to finish the 1/2 built instruments already in the shop before starting any new ones. I don't even want to say how many there are. That should get me through to 2012 easily before I need any new resolutions!

Hi Hesh,

Great to see you on the forum again.

Re New Year's resolutions:

Build a classical
Build using a Cedar top
Set up to test and document sound boards for density/stiffness
Learn about Chladni testing
Start making traditional-style rosettes from scratch

and last, but not least - clean up and reorganize the shop!

I'd better get to work.

Like Jim, I'll be away from home for a fair bit of the year, darned work getting in the way of my life. But, I do resolve to spend more time building...and finishing the guitars I've started - not to mention the jewelry boxes for my nieces that have been half finished on the shelf for a year now.

Anyway, Happy New Year and all the best in 2010.

My resolutions:

1. Finish the deflection, compliance, and chladni testing on the three I have in progress and set up a database for future measurements.
2. Make a decision as to how I want to attach the necks on the current batch.
3. Quit thinking so much about what I'm going to do and actually get these three built.
4. Fix the neck on OM #1 with either a new fretboard and trussrod or a whole new neck.
5. Maybe build the 20+ drawers for the shop that I've already prepared and installed slides for - sure would help with my storage problem duh .

Hey Hesh! Good to "see" you! :D My NYR for lutherie is the same as it was for golf (when I played)...eliminate the STUPID stuff that causes me to have to work harder! For example, don't bend a side "inside out", don't break a tuner screw head off by being too lazy to wax the screw or drill the hole more carefully, fill around my headstock logo completely the FIRST time, etc... [:Y:]. Oh yeah, and selling a guitar again would be nice...2009 was a slow year!

Mine is to see Hesh use a nice Lutz top that ISN'T painted black [xx(] ...... laughing6-hehe

1) Get the new shop built
2) Get WAY ahead of my current and continuous "waiting list"
3) Learn more about the new CNC Machine so I can offer more products
4) Finish off "#1" and get a couple more guitars and a violin started

Man! I better get to work...it will be a busy year! I may be at the Montreal show this year as well so I hope to see the odd OLF'er there too.

Happy New Year everyone and thanks for the continued support in 2009 and really since I started and I sure hope 2010 treats you all well!

    I'd like to practice more with my spray system this year. I bought it with my tax return last spring, but the compressor was louder than I imagined and I didn't do much with it because I didn't want to become a noise nuisance. Now that we're in a house, I'm more comfortable practicing.

    I'm about to finish my first acoustic. The neck is set, and I'm in the process of fretting. As I told some of my friends on the ANZLF board, this is a huge accomplishment. I've had too many false starts.

    I'd also like to carve a neck. Get my toes wet with that process.

Happy new year everyone !!!

My resolution is to build a 'prototype' guitar. By that I mean a box with double M/T neck joint for the sole purpose of trying different bracing schemes. I plan to then order a number of cheap 'character' tops (Shane, are you there ???) and start experimenting. I'm about to finish my third guitar now and I'm tired of the feeling of not really knowing what I'm doing when it comes to bracing and voicing the top.

finish reading all the books i have gotten and understand them!. finish the two flat tops im working on before spring. i have a mandolin project that i just bought wood for that i would love to have completed by the end of next year. plus in the summer i told myself i need to build at least 1 electric guitar. maybe a bass as well.

A very Happy New Year to you all! I started my resolution early and that is to do a little carving.

I played an old Gibson about 25 years ago and it was, to my ear, the sweetest sounding mandolin I had heard. So far I''m just kinda' bumbling along with the carving. I guess I'll keep whittling away and see what transpires.

I guess as far as resolutions....... hone my skills on sharpening tool that aren't flat. i.e. gouges, curved sole planes etc. And of course as always, to try to have more fun than I did last year. That's usually one resolution I have no trouble keeping.

My NYR, which is useful on so many levels, is to be more disciplined.
Not just in guitar building, but all areas.
That alone will substantially improve the time spent in the shop.

Don't go there, Hesh. After my bouts of respiratory illness several years back I removed cocobolo from my shop. Now I am doing a guitar with just coco binding and that alone is giving me fits! Just the "aroma" of it being scraped sets me into sneezing fits and later in the day massive sinus congestion. And I'm wearing a respirator, but the residual in the shop is enough to do the damage! If you're sensitized to the stuff, even a little bit will cause problems. An entire guitar body could put you in respiratoy arrest. [xx(]

Worst part of all this is that cocobolo looks so wonderful and sounds so great.

Well, two necks, two fretboards, four tops, two end grafts, two sets of sides, two back sets, and one back rebrace, I can finally see the end. I've routed the binding and purfling ledges and I'm finally ready to bind #1.
In 2010 I resolve to:
Finish #1,
Cut down on the amount of jigs I just gotta have,
and mature as a Christian.

I resolve to resist the temptation to air my personal animosities/grudges/prejudices/drama in this forum. If I *really* can't help sharing my clever response to what that guy on my enemies list just said with my buddies, I'll keep it private.

If they're trying their damndest to push all my buttons again, I resolve to let it slide without comment. I resolve to forgive them, for they know not that they're still sometimes stuck in junior high.




And oh yeah -- I resolve to finish that half-completed strat copy, and start my first acoustic build. And play more. And, show a little personal discipline & keep the ADD demons at bay, so I actually stick with some interesting pursuit for more than a couple weeks.

My allergies are so bad that I will make a down draft table and see if that helps. I will leave space for carbon filters, because I cannot tollerate event the fragrance of cedar, much less the dust that is missed by the dust collection system.

My goal is to have fun and do a great job on my current orders. Beyond that...I guess it's to just keep having fun and the end 2010 with the same number of fingers that I have now..! :D
