Post subject:  Definition of Flat top?

There have been so many different ways I've heard the term flat top used that I haven't the faintest idea what it actually means. I've heard it as a synonym for any steel string guitar out there, any guitar that isn't an archtop, etc, etc. I think the most logical one was that the braces have no radius thus making it a "flat top". While we're on the topic, is there any real difference between a flat top and a (and I use this term loosely) "standard" guitar?

Ummm, Dan,

No two the same of anything on this planet, and quite possibly in the entire universe.

so, no they are absolutely total different from one another. But then again if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...well then maybe.....

The term "flattop" is used by the public to descibe a steel string guitar that isn't an archtop or electric. The term definitely can be used for true flat topped guitars as well as those built with a slight radius.
