Wich is cool anyways, you look anywhere, and there's wood. Wood here, wood there.

As I continue to acquire billets, boards, scraps, pieces, parts, and misc. resawn items, I am beginning to struggle with a good storage system for all the wood that seems to mysteriously be appearing in my shop. You guys have any photos or descriptions of how you deal with your mounting supplies of raw materials and prepared parts? thanks. -j. |

J. I bought some heavy duty restaurant shelving on wheels. I sort my woods by condition. That is ,rough,shaped,or ready to use. I keep all tops & backs stickered and easily accessible. I keep all f.boards and necks stacked close to each other. Sides are laid on the edge that would be glued to the top or back so it's easy to pull out just one set. All ready to use tops and backs and necks etc--have their own area so I can easily pick out what I need without pulling a stack apart. I have trouble posting pics here so I hope you can visualize what I've said. Mike  .

I have all my wood pressed and slatted for air flow . I try and rotate the wood a few times a year . I also have a climate controlled shop. Before that I used an old chest freezer for a wood storage unit. You can get a surprising amount of wood in one. I had a few small holes drilled through it and used a single 60 watt light bulb for heat . This worked very well to keep the wood dry and stable. I got the idea from a gunsmithing friend. You can use springs to tension the wood stacks. I try to keep the stacks to about 12 sets pet pile. I also found 3/4 stickers worked well to allow air flow . Too small an opening and you won't get convection currents to flow. I had a 2 by 4 on the bottom with the wider side up to start the stack. This can also make a usable kiln. I used a disk furnace and piped the heat in through a 6 inch hole in the bottom and returned the warm air to the the disk furnace . This was in a small metal box. I could get the heat to 130 degrees and hold it there very easy. I could get the wood to measure off at under 7% within a few weeks. |

I also have wood everywhere i look.  It got to the point of really getting in my way, so i moved alot of it to my garage.I just keep what i think i will use in the shop now which i like alot better.
