Post subject:  HELP!! Trying to re-create this crazy binding scheme....

The picture you see in this post is of a binding job that was done on a Bajo Sexto. It's a really big Mexican guitar. The binding is roughly 200 thou square. According to 'sources'...it's pine and walnut...but that's not what I really need help with.

Can anyone tell me how to do this??? More specifically - how to get it to bend in the waist area? Everything I've tried so far has broken.

This kind of looks like one of Edward Dick's guitars he did for the millennium. He used ebony and MOP. He glued in each block one at a time. That may be what you need to do. Good luck!

This block scheme on this guitar has the blocks tilted somewhat at an angle...I can't gather (in my head) how you manage to install them cleanly AND at an angle....

I build these as approx 6" x 12" blocks with strips at 45 degrees

glue it up clamped over wax paper to a plywood carrier. Once dry trim and joint 1 edge, and then rip to width and trim ends at 45 deg to match the strips.

glue the blocks with polyurethane (gorilla) or plastic resin glue and you can use heat to bend it.

Chris, Ron Steiger has done some of these, you may wanna ask him. IIRC, he put veneer strips on the inside and the outside. The inside ones were left on, as purflings, and the outside one just helped hold it together - they were installed purposely sticking up proud of the rims and subsequently trimmed off with a router. I may be blending 2 builders' technique together, but ask Ron.

This is for the ukulele, but it should work on a guitar. http://uketalk.com/luthier-tutorials/rope-binding.htm

Joe Kelly has one he shows in his avatar. His are not on an angle like this, but same idea.
I like Dennis' solution.

And if you don't want to mess around, I sell those bindings already made, and the b/w/b purfs as well.
