Does anyone have an orphaned side of tiger myrtle, or other scrap at least .080" x 3/4" x 20", with good tiger figure? I've decided to put a tiger myrtle center strip in the back of a guitar I'm making, but I don't have a suitable piece.

Thanks in advance!

Todd,

Are you looking for Tasmanian Tiger Myrtle, or plain old USA myrtle? PM sent.

Cheers,
Dave F.

Thanks, Dave. Sorry if I wasn't clear - yes, it's the Tasmanian tiger myrtle I need. I might check with Tim, but I'm hoping somebody a bit more local might have a piece to spare.

Did you try Bob at RC Tonewoods or Stephen at Colonial Tonewoods? It might be hard to find an orphan side since the stuff bends so easily. I looked in my shop, but I came up empty.

Thanks for looking, Ken. Bob said he doesn't have anything (though he does have some tiger myrtle B&S sets on his web site), and I haven't heard back from Steve yet.

BTW, I'm thinking I'd like to make the back center strip about 1/2" wide, and the guitar is a less than 19" long, so the actual dimensions I need are just over 1/2" wide x 19" long. The back is already joined, so I'll be inlaying the strip - .080" thickness would be more than enough (I'll probably thin it down to about .060" before inlaying it).

Todd, the tiger myrtle figure is usually quite bold and it might be difficult to find something 1/2 inch wide that would show off the figure. Anyway, good luck in your search.

Perhaps you could rip a half inch off a good side Todd? If the side was wide enough, it could probably still be used as a side. Just a thought...

Thank you, Mike! That's very kind of you. I hope it's not too much trouble. Also, I just want to be sure you understand I'm looking for Tasmanian tiger myrtle, not domestic myrtle. As a matter of fact, I'll post a photo of a piece I have. I'm looking for a piece that would more or less match this stuff - ideally, similar to the area I've circled with chalk. That orangey background color would contrast nicely with the back wood on this guitar. I'll also post the rosette photo I posted here before. If you have a piece that you think might work for me, I would gratefully take you up on it. If not, no sweat, and thanks anyway!

As for the girls, thanks for asking. They're doing very well, though my nine-year-old is sick right now, and that's always a workout for all of us. It's just amazing how fast they grow and change. Actually, they amaze me daily in so many ways!
