Has anyone ever experienced or heard of FP cold checking like nitro? |

Tim if the shellac has experinced harsh heat then exposed to below freezing it can start checking but I have never had an issue. It seems the harsh heat makes athe shellac overly brittle once it hardens bak at a cold temp. But this is pretty rare to have happen. |

i had this happen once and i think i may know what caused it .....to start with i was using a rubber to put the shellac on so i was using an oil to lubricate the rubber....but then i decided to spray build and buff .........and a week or so later it had the most crazy cold dheck effect i have ever seen i think it maybe the oil trapped under the surface and its making its way out........does this have any resemblence to your situation tim? joe |

I had this situation with the first guitar I built 3 years ago. I really thought this had something to do with the build-up being awfully thick, and the temprature extremes that I had to deal with back then. BTW, I french polished in late summer and didn`t notice anything until about December. It did get cold, but not below 45 degrees. I thought I was one of the few to have this happen. Funny thing about it is that my daughter asked me if I could make that "pretty patina" on her hope chest, and had to admit that I didn`t plan on it in the first place, and didn`t really know how it happened. It does give it character, though (or should I say done by a real character). Refinish it? No way. That guitar is done and I have no reason to change it at all, being #1. Coe Franklin |

I just wanted to know if anyone had ever had it happen. based on your responses, sounds like it is plausible though. I did subject a FP (top only) guitar to some temps in the teens and it never checked BUT it was in a room where the temps came down and back up very slowly and the finish was very thin. It wasn't subjected to an abrupt change which usually will make nitro check. |
