How do bind a carved body with recurve if it hasnt been bound before?Im new to this stuff so any suggestions will help

Cory, I'm trying to picture what you are asking in my head and not doing a great job. Are you talking about an acoustic or an electric? Have a picture? |

arch top or an electric? I built a jig which is essentially a 2'x2' piece of MDF with an overarm support for a router. when you have a flat backed guitar it is easy to get the binding channels a common depth. That way you can work around the deep spot in the cutaway. The same method would work for an arch top but you would need to put the guitar in a carriage and carefully level it first |

IF understand question you have some sort of guitar or mandolin with carved top that did not have binding before along the outer edge of instrument. I would say if that is the case and you want to add binding, you then have to cut binding channels and then bend the binding to fit the channels. If a good instrument and this is your thinking, I would do it and leave well enough alone. If want that build an instrument and do the channels as you build. Your likely to make a good instrument a bad one. If I misunderstand your question then sorry don't have a clue of what your asking Did this before seen Brock's post and go with him. Most archtops I was around being built as well as other carve guitars have a flat rim and the edge of the carved plates are flat also at about an inch or more with a Wagner Safety Plane. But that is not with a re curve as you describe like in a mandolin or electric guitar where may have the router having access area to the edge. Grammel and chisel comes to mind |
