Finished this peghead during football yesterday and included a shot of the tools I used....because someone asked me to post them.
Question: Would it be wise for me to shellac any sanded, finished carved necks/pegheads that I do prior to attachment to the body? I want to seal and protect them as they may not find a guitar body for some time.

I think a coat of shellac would be a good idea. I believe it will help protect the carvings, and it won't cause problems with any finish I know of.

If you ever use rosewoods for the headplate (maybe other woods too), the ethanol in shellac will run the dark tars and may darken the wood more than you want. It will also run onto the light woods if you are not careful.

Beautiful Bailey. FWIW, the finish that seams most accepted as showing off the beauty of handcarving (at least from my cabriole leg & ball/claw foot days) is wax over shellac.

Nice work! I think a shellac sealler would be fine. I would use dewaxed shellac. This way it won't interfere with a future topcoat...Mike

I ran into the running problem with cocobolo. There are several ways to solve this but the easiest I found is to just spray the shellac. Light coats that don't wet the wood too much are fine. As always, test on scrap.

A couple thin coats of Shellac was what I was thinking. I wanted to give these carved necks the look of having a finish as they may also become show displays. I wanted to make sure a light coat of shellac finish would not hinder the potential use by another Luthier.
Thanks....The'll get a Shellacing today.
