anything is better then harbor freight sandpaper.
the problem with 3M and Harbor freight is that they are usually commercial use Garnet paper, wears out fast and cuts slower. The up side to Garnet paper is that the end result will be smoother then other kinds of paper.
If you are sanding raw wood i would recomend and Industrial strength Aluminum oxide paper (Norton) They say this stuff sharpens itself as it cuts, lasts longer. The down side is that the end result isnt as smooth, and of course its never cheep.
I would say start with aluminium oxide, then switch to Garnet to prep for finishing.

Stockroom Supply is a good source, or you can order directly from Klingspor Woodworking Shop, on line. www.woodworkingshop.com They have really nice papers, and all kinds of belts, including some real high end stuff. Based out of Hickory, NC, they used to cater to the furniture industry, and I'm sure they still do, but that industry has been decimated.

Zirconia Alumina (aka Zirconia) lasts a very long time with wood, and is my first choice for PSA disks since it's difficult to replace them. McMaster page 2624 for one source.
