What could i use to fill in zebra wood? I heard somewhere that you can use egg whites, is this true? |

Yes you can. Egg white dries to a hard resin like material but it is hygroscopic, that probably won't matter under a finish. Seal any light coloured inlays first and apply the egg white and sand with the grain. Don't sand over the inlays but next or near to them and push the resulting slurry into the pores with your fingers. it may take 3 applications to fill the grain. Creating a glare seems to make for a more homogenous, easier to use liquid. Test on similar scrap wood material first, preferably with your chosen finish applied as well. I've tried it on EI Rosewood and the pore fill colour was perfectly fine. On Walnut it resulted in the pore colour being too light, although that may have been due to that particular piece. Golden rule:always test first. |

Yes, egg whites work and as such is a valid pour filler... but then so is anything else that you can shove into the pours that stays put. Blessings the Padma |

there is more too it then just use egg whites whip up your egg whites untill you get all the clumps out. then stick them in the fridge overnight. when you get up the next day, skim the funky stuff off the top. the liquid left over is what you use to pore fill. for traditional reason this is how you should pore fill under a french polsih. anything else use zpoxy or ive heard some people use CA or super glue |

Do a search on 'Vernice bianca' and you will get lots of info on using egg white 'ground' . Vernice bianca is from the fiddle world, where they use woods (maple and spruce) that don't require pore filling, so I'm not sure how it will apply to your situation. I'd do some experiments before slapping it on a guitar. Pumice is often used in traditional French Polishing during the pore filling stage. Cheers John |

There are ala sorts of media to fill pores. egg whites have been used for century’s There are oil based paste, acrylic based paste, epoxy, tinted spackling and plaster (I would not use due the water in plaster plus the mess) and my choice, med viscosity CA. Almost anything that will fill the pore, harden, not shrink back and not cause adhesion issue with the finish gets the job done. Matching sawdust and shellac is a great pore filler.
