Here are some pictures of my latest completion. This is a pre-war styled dread with traditional inlay. The back, sides, headplate, fretboard & bridge were cut from a very old salvaged beam. The top & braces are Adi. I used Zipflex for the purflings and really liked working with it. Joe White did the shiny part! Mike Franks http://www.mjfranksguitar.com |

Mike, I had the pleasure of seeing this one when I visited Joe's shop a while back. You do some very beautiful and clean work. |

Are those Ivoroid bindings? If so are they the grained type? I think They are but a bit hard to tell from my computer. If so did you get them from Martin? Nice looking Dread for sure. |

Thanks for the kind comments folks! Bob, the Braz was supplied by the customer but I did get a matching set as part of the commission. The bindings are grained Ivoroid. I have been getting my bindings from the Guitar Maker's Connection at Martin because they are available in 62" lengths and Martin does not force me to pay a "Hazardous Material" surcharge. The guitar sounds phenomenal with tons of bass and sustain. It kills me to know that the customer is a collector and not a player. This guitar would make a Bluegrass player very happy. Hey Mike, very nice! What is the planset basis? And, did you use Zip Flex by chance? Mike |

Mike, my body mold basically follows the Martin outline with the shoulders slightly squared and a bit extra depth. The 2 lower bout back braces are the older style flat braces which I find to allow increased back movement. The planform is not too different from the Stew Mac Dread plans. My top bracing is patterned from a pre-war Martin Dread with some minor tweeks. The purflings are indeed Zipflex. Mike Franks http://www.mjfranksguitar.com |
