I love coming to the point where the box is together, everything is scraped and sanded, and I get the first few seal coats of shellac for pore filling. I can see the figure in the grain, the silking on the top, the deep and rich colors... This thing finally looks like the beautiful instrument it is. Even though I have a few weeks of work to go, I can see the finish line. It feels like Christmas morning... Does this ever get old? |

That part is wonderful and terrible at the same time. Finishing is not my forte so to speak.... so there is much trepidation and frustration... but I soldier thru it.... Seeing the beauty in the wood is what makes finishing worthwhile. I really love finally getting thru the finishing and into the final setup -- Gluing on the bridge, making the nut and saddle, fretwork, etc.... But... Stringing it up is the best part of all! Gee I sure hope not....me only problem ( well one of them is) after stringing her up in the white, me sometimes just cant be bothered to de-string and put the finish on. So after playing her for a year or so and she gets all dirty, me just slap on a coat of oil, call it an antique finish and send her on down the line. Right there with you, Matthew. Finished the pore filling on a Madagascar RW OM over the weekend. She is all sanded back and ready to 'blossom' as you so aptly put it! Ken |

Truly exciting prefinish time too... I've re sanded, refilled all stupidy missed spots (blaming it on the eyes) and again ready for the finish coats to bring my little 50 year old 630 classical back to life. She's going to be a beauty. Can't wait to string her up once again...as she hasn't been played in almost 20 years. I'll be able to fantasize on how I USED to be able to play her. Kent Bailey |
