i am amidst the build of a single cutaway electric guitar and i have decided to do a burst on it. this will be the first burst that i have ever done so i have been looking around and researching a good bit trying to get information on what methods there are and the correct way to implement them. i think i have decided on using aniline dye's to to achieve the effect im looking for, but im not sure where i should purchase the dye from, or if i should get water based, or oil based, or whatever other kind of base there may happen to be. soo... to get down to the question where do you get dye from? and what are the pros and cons, of the water base, vs. the oil base? any other tips or suggestion that you may have regarding the use of this stuff would also be appreciated. im definitely going work with some scrap wood first, but beyond that are there any headache avoiding tips? |

I use Trans-Tint dyes, mixed with shellac. You can get the dye from OLF sponsor Rockler http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=11448&filter=dye The dyes will mix with a bunch of different finishes, but, like I said, I mix them with shellac under whatever top coat I use. |

i did a search on here earlier today and found that video, i tried to watch it but it just kept saying an error occured. then later when i was searching for other videos on you tube i found it there as well and it wouldn't play. long story short, i have tried watching it like four times today and something is either wrong with my computer or the video. |

I think the problem might be with Youtube. I got the same error message when trying to watch some videos on Youtube today. I just checked the Sunburst video and it appears to be working fine. |

Stewmac translucent dye and Transtint both are great dyes. I use both and the ratios need for various tints seem to be identical. |
