I've built only one 000 model guitar with the traditional X braced top. I'm pleased with the sound, but wonder what is the effect on sound if the base of the X is widened, or narrowed. If widened, does that make the bass stronger? Just wondering if I should modify the bracing pattern on my next 000 build. |

It's hard to describe sound, at least for me. Opening the "X" should bring out more bass, same as moving the "X" forward. It's all got to do with where the "X" crosses under the bridge wings. I don't pay much attention to the angle, or location of the intersection. I put the upper ends of the "X" near the upper face brace, then plot where I want them to go under the bridge. If you can look at some templates or plans of older vs Modern Martins, or Gibsons you can see how stuff changes in them. I hope this make sense. |
