| Post subject: | Porefilling & Tone |
Just wondering if there's info out there on the effects of porefilling on tone.Has anyone done any sonic testing before and after porefilling. I couldn't find anything in a search, so that's why i'm asking.I have noticed a sonic difference.What's your thoughts on this subject? |

It seems to me that anything that is done to a guitar, including pore filling, a finish in general, or ones arm resting on the box when playing,for that matter, affect the tone. Pore filling is cosmetic in nature and it is certainly not necessary for a fine sounding guitar, however, it is ( in my opinion) more or less, necessary to produce a salable instrument, just as is a high quality finish. I believe that EVERYTHING makes a difference. I also believe some of these subtle things make have too small of an effect for me (and others) to hear. I believe the combination of these small things that are the difference between a truly great guitar, and one you can walk in a big chain store and buy off the shelf. I don't think pore filling is bad, .......................or either I do think it's necessary ........but I'll always sand the filler(reguardless of type) back to the wood, only leaving it in the pores. What good is a thin finish if there's a layer of filler under it? At least that's the way it works in my mind. |

I seriously doubt this one bit. Think about this for 1 minute. You fill the pore , either the finish will get in there or the filler. The sound of the guitar is mostly generated on the top. That is not to say there may be some inference of the sides and backs , as we know this is true. Filler will not cause a change in the tone or volume that any human would be able to ascertain . The only way this could happen is if you get way too much on and never sand it down to level. Another look is finish thickness ,this can effect a tonal change if you get too much at the wrong spots. I think I would be more concerned about building techniques and joinery . If filling were detrimental , we would have stopped using it years ago. |

As to leaving a layer on the surface, I suspect that sanding back to the wood probably encourages finish absorption by the wood, versus leaving a .0005 skim of toothed epoxy which effectively seals the surface...once again, either finish or a high index filler...I think the end result is about the same thickness and same mass. ..................................................................................................................... There you go making me think!!!!!!!!!! I hadn't considered the skim of epoxy sealing the wood, and preventing absorption. I do believe thickness, and weight are issues to be considered with finishing. |
