Here are the rosettes for two guitars I'm working on right now. I know this kind of thing is child's play for some of you, but this is new stuff for me. I owe a lot of thanks to several of my friends here on the OLF for inspiration and technical guidance. Thanks!

They look great! I assume you made the purfs too to match? They look really sweet. What are the back and sides woods for these guitars? (are they guitars?)

Both are really nice Todd !! I'm anxious to see the completed guitars now that you've done such a great job on the rosettes. I've always been a fan of Tiger Myrtle and the second with the vanishing point motif is very nice. Keep up the good work. I'm with Burton, what did you use for back and sides for the both of them?

Burton, I didn't make the purfs, but I stock as wide a palette of purfs as I can and look for good color combinations. I'm going to have to start making some purfs, because I'm not satisfied with the colors that are commercially available. I was able to come up with colors I liked for these, though. The pear came from Shane (High Mt Tonewoods), and I like it a lot with the tiger myrtle and the other woods that I'll be using on this guitar. It's actually going to be a guitar-bouzouki, a five course (10 string) instrument for an Irish bouzouki player. The back and sides are palo escrito, and the neck and bindings will be curly Oregon walnut. The walnut has a lot of red in it, and the palo escrito is an orangey brown, so I think it's all going to go together nicely. The top, by the way, is sitka from Brent Cole, the bridge will be Madagascar rosewood, and the FB will be ebony w/ Mad rose bindings. Palo escrito head plates.

The other rosette, with the fanned maple lines in the Eucalyptus burl, is going on a guitar with a bear claw sitka top, ziricote B&S (also ziricote bridge, FB, and headplates), and plain walnut neck and bindings. Mostly darker, cooler colors, with maple purfs to brighten it up a bit. I thought about using curly walnut for the neck and bindings, but the color of the plain walnut I have goes much better with the ziricote, and the ziricote is such a visual treat already that it didn't really need to be dressed up with curly trim.

Both of these instruments are using the same small body shape, the first to be built using this shape, another one of my weird high-waisted shapes designed to put the bridge at the widest point of the lower bout. The neck will join the body at the 15th fret.

That's a lot of info for a couple of instruments that are just in the beginning stages of being built! :D It'll be several months before these are done.

Very nicely done Todd, and pleasing to the eyes! [:Y:] I love the look of wood rosettes. On two of the current builds I have going I've made Amboyna Burl Rosettes for them. One is a book-matched 8 pc similar to your top pic and the other was cut from a book-matched two piece. I really like the perspective of the 2nd pic as well. Thanks for posting them.

Bill, you can probably tell this from the photo, but I deliberately did not try to match the pieces in the tiger myrtle rosette. I wanted a segmented look, rather than a seamless look. I kind of alternated lighter and darker pieces as well - I just liked the way it looked that way. It's cool, too, though, when people piece them together in a way that looks seamless. I've seen some amazing rosettes done that way.

My fretboard extensions are floating/elevated, but they'll mostly obscure the top part of the rosette, since the soundhole is quite high and the 22 fret FB will extend more than an inch over the hole. Why am I telling you this? ... I don't know, just the ramblings of a tired guy who should be in bed...

They both look great! The wood in the first is really beautiful and the second is like a ray of sunshine. Very cool.

Looks good! I find the second one to be more interesting and less of a standard format. But if you know me I like a little flash. Is that your own body design? I like it too. How did you go about cutting the line channels in the second one ? Always nice to get some technic tips as how you approached that.
