Hi all. I am workin on a Cocobolo B/S guitar. the neck "mahogany" feels way to bright for being a good match. Question is. what are you guys using for tinting the neck. Just want it one step darker/redish or brownish. Can I use any kind of water/alcohol based tint ? or is there anything you would recommend. also whats the best way to put it on. Drytime/sand etc. procedure!: Thanks in advance, Lars. |

I would stay away from water based as I don't like to introduce any moisture into the wood....specially the neck. |

Here's a mahogany / EIR one I did with the Colortone liquid stains from Stewmac. I used medium brown, tobacco brown and possibly some vintage amber, all reduced in alcohol and applied to the bare wood with a rag. This instrument was then finished with nitro. ![]() |

From another thread bluescreek wrote: I use CA to fill and as for necks , if you want to get a good match to the rosewood , I use red mahogany stain first follwed by Dark brown Mahogany stain , then use a blackened filler. I will go to 320 grit to stain and fill . If the stain doesn't work even I will use 320 grit sandpaper and sand stain to even the color.
I don't use water stains but have used aniline dyes |
