I have run across several posts where people mention using thick CA for pore filling. i am just curious who uses this and how it is done? Also can you apply any finish over the CA?

I use it on headstocks .. simply squeeze some out of the tube/bottle, and scrape it around with a razor blade. Sand it back to the wood and finish ....

I use it sometimes. I dont use thick, I use either medium or thin depending on the wood. I believe getting thick down into the pores would be hard. I just spead it with a paper towel, and sometimes push it into the pores with a gloved hand.

Thick to med viscosity CA. Apply about the size of a nickle, use a single edge razor blade with the corners rounded over to spread the CA. Sand back to wood, repeat if needed. 2 seal coats of shellac then spray your finish.

While I am using thin and medium CA I use a nitrile glove and just wipe it in. I want it to penetrate any micro cracks in the side set. I do not seal spruce. I do 2 coats and sand between coats.

Good morning John (and everyone else for that matter :D )

John, in saying you do not seal Spruce, do you mean with Shellac, or CA, or both? Just curious because I usually use Shellac and have been wondering about using CA on the Spruce.

Rod, Woody, & Tony, I'd be interested in your thoughts on this too. :) Thanks in advance for your replies, I've gotta go feed the horses then get out into the shop.

I believe John is saying he doesn't fill spruce, but I can't speak for him. I fill with CA but put a couple coats of shellac on first, unless it's Braz, the I fill the bare wood. I don't fill spruce, and usually don't fill maple. I seal everything with shellac before finishing.

Only porous wood gets CA filled. Everything gets sealed with shellac (nothing on the fret boards mind you, only a coat of oil, then wiped off and buffed). Some builders seal spruce with egg white, they call it "sizing" but I don't know why it's called that.

I've been kicking around the idea of CA as a pore filler. Been finishing my own work for years and have patched cracks and wormholes, etc. with CA but haven't pore filled yet. Guess I'll have to give it a try. Well, back to the shop with me. Thanks again! :)

I do not seal spruce with CA. I also do not use shellac I use vinyl sealer . It is just my preference but shellac is an acceptable sealer. i just don't like to risk compatibility with different finish suppliers. If it is a hog top I will use a filler.

Thanks John! :) I like to use shellac as a sealer myself. Two of my current four builds are getting the EM6000 but after reading all the stuff about the blue haze that I've always hated, the two darker guitars (Coco & EIR) are going to get the KTM-SV. After reading all Randy's posts on it I'm sold! [:Y:] But, I've got the issue of a gallon each of the EM6000 and the 8000 sealer that I must use up. Guess I could use it as the finish the new Cherry cabinets I'm building for our new kitchen.

I use thinned out 5 minute epoxy as a filler. It is thinned with alcohol,and I generally use 4X the volume of alcohol to epoxy to thin it. It takes about 10 or 15 minutes to start getting set up too much to brush on. I use a cheap bristle brush with the bristles cut 2/3 of the way off,to work it into the grain.

If you wait an hour or 2,the epoxy gets "leather hard",and is easy to sand off. Generally,with large pores like Brazilian rosewood,I may do this another coat or two. Spruce needs only 1.

The epoxy does not give the wood a cool hue. It makes the wood look nice and rich under the finish. It is a LOT easier to sand off than CA,unless you wait overnight. After a good sealing,3 or 4 coats of finish look like 20 coats,but minimizes the effects of too much finish on the tone.
