Post subject:  Looking for Fluer de Lis position markers
Hello everyone,

I am new here and have been looking for Fluer de Lis position markers for a project I am planning. I have been able to find on place that offers them. But they are 2 inches in size. I need to find a place that sells them to be used as position markers. I would like to use them just like you would a normal dot position marker but so far I can not find anywhere that offers them.

I was hoping someone here in this vast network of Luthiers might know of a place I can find them. Or have already used them in the past and would be able to point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I'd check with Andy DePaule over at luthiersupply. I'm sure if he doesn't already carry them, he could custom make you a set.

I never really considered trying to cut my own for my first build because I figured I would have enough on my hands with learning everything else. But now I'm considering trying to cut them myself. Unless of coarse I find exactly what I want for a decent price.

So how dificult is cutting inlays? Specifically in my design idea?

It depends how small you want them to be. With a decent set up and some practice I am sure you could cut them, unless you want super small ones.

I will be using them as position markers. So that should give you the idea on the size

Nothing wrong with buying a jeweler's saw and some MOP and giving it a shot. Take the symbol and print off a bunch on paper the size you want them, then super glue to the shell and cut to the lines. Just remember to wear a dust mask, MOP is a carcinogen.

very true

I was just thinking that it might be a smarter choice to keep my first build simple. But the more I think about it. If I'm going to do it. I might as well do it all the way and go all out to get exactly what I want. Instead of waiting to add it to the "next" project.

Custom inlays aren't cheap compared to off-the-shelf ones, but I'm sure I could cut them as small as you could want.

Depending on your chops, though, I'd leave the super-intricate inlay for #2...intricate inlay makes people want to look closer, and often you don't want them looking tooooo closely at your first :)
