Seeing Stephen Ziegenfuss' lovely new spalled maple electric got me thinking again ... I wonder what others think. Is there a "proper" (or favoured or whatever!) way to align the tuners? My headstock sides swoop a bit, but I still mount the tuners square. Opinions??
....perpendicular to the guitar centerline?
....perpendicular to the headstock edge (at the tuner position)?
(Perfect for a "poll", but I couldn't figure how to do that.)

I prefer perpendicular to the center line of the neck. If you have a head stock design that is similar to a Gibson or Guild than making the tuning shafts perpendicular to the edge of the head stock will cause the tuner buttons to bunch up.

For a Martin style headstock, either alignment seem to look OK. But, for most designs perpendicular to the center line of the neck works best.

Perpendicular to the centerline. I think they'd look goofy on my headstock any other way. Mock 'em up, and see what they look like.

I think it depends on the headstock but as a long time player if they're angled I don't like them too far off or they seem to be awkward to manage.
