Post subject:  Finally found my SOMOGYI footage.

Hi folks,

Due to my move from Europe back to homeland USA two years ago, I missed parts of my archived video vault. I finally found it. There are more than 2 hours of unbelievable Somogyi footage.
After reviewing the footage this afternoon, I decided to share it almost unedited with y'all. Ervin is such a great speaker that it would be a shame to take out pieces. I truly believe this is footage that needs to be preserved and shared with future generations of guitar makers. Here is part 1 (there are a bunch in the making).

Have a wonderful evening - I am totally excited!
Cheers, Holger

Fantastic!

For those of us that would have to fly to the US to do Ervin's course, stuff like this is a godsend.

Thanks very much. Please give us more.

Holger, Thank you so much for parts I and now II! These are fabulous!

All, for reference, I FFT'd the tap tones in part II and found these frequencies (no bridge or finish, of course):
Tapping top with back free (1:25): 85 Hz and 173 Hz
Tapping top w/ mic at soundhole (5:55): 84 Hz
Tapping back (6:51): 225 Hz

The 84-85Hz A0 is quite low compared to other guitars I've measured (92-104 Hz), especially for a cutaway. A bridge adds both mass and stiffness, so I'm not sure which way A0 would go with a bridge.

they are both still where the links lead you...the first one is in the first post of this thread, and the second link is in the post by david82282...you need to scroll through the menu on the right for the second one (or do a search for somogyi)

The second is still available but the 1st has been removed for copyright by Mr Somogyi. Has anyone saved the 1st one I would love to see it. I have a feeling number 3 will not be available if there is a copyright issue.

interesting....I went to the original link after I saw your post and I at the very least saw the picture of the video (which is now no longer there)...I forget if I actually tried to start it, but I think I did...perhaps I saw it because it was still cached from my view...

Post subject:  Re: Finally found my SOMOGYI footage.

Hey Fred, where did you get the info that Somogyi pulled it because of copyright? Not doubting it just didn't see anything that said that when I went and saw that it is indeed gone.

I really don't get Somogyi's reasoning to pull something that is presented to honor his work, thoughts and words. This was not like someone was using his lecture to make a profit for themselves or misrepresenting him in any way. As a builder that isn't in a position to easily afford his books, I have been watching these and reading what I could about him to learn more and help me decide if I need to make a supreme effort to get the money for his books. Seems to me that if his thoughts and ideas and presentation of such, are all he claims them to be, then a little free publicity would only work in his favor.

This attitude of not wanting anyone to hear his ideas unless they pay up front definitely does not encourage me to buy the books.

My 2 cents,
Joe

If you click on the video to play it the message comes up. I don't really understand either as though I found his talk interesting he really does not give any detail about how one must achieve the results he is looking for. I like these kind of videos as a look at what thinking the builder puts into his work.

One possible reason. From an email sent Sept 9.

"One final piece of nesws is that while at Healdsburg, I gave a lecture-presentation on Voicing The Guitar. I had it filmed and we’re editing the footage into an hour-and-a-half-to-two-hour long DVD, which will be available in a month. I plan to sell this through my website and also through L.M.I. and Stewart-MacDonald.

Sincerely, Ervin Somogyi"

Post subject:  Re: Finally found my SOMOGYI footage.

I don't think the vids will be seen around again...not because of merit to Ervin's copyright claim, but because of the cost of fighting it in court...the way I see it is simple: Somogyi chose to be interviewed and obviously knew he was being filmed...the videos that we saw were not being sold, rather like any interview being 'aired'...IMHO Mr. Somogyi has no right to claim any sort of copyright on these videos and their presence should in no way detract from his project that he plans to sell (it had better not, as the videos give no detailed analysis and if that is what Ervin plans to sell then it will be a rip off)
