| Post subject: | Strip finish on neck without removing dye |
I have an LP that I would like to remove the finish on the neck and re-spray. But I do not want to remove the red dye. Any suggestions? Also any place in canada I can get the red dye? I have a little touch up to do. thanks d1 |

The only stuff I've re-finished are my own screw ups but I'd say you have no hope of doing what you achieve. The color coats are ridiculously thin and can be sanded through in a heartbeat. What you could try to do is do a heavy scuff sand on the existing finish being ultra careful not to sand all the way through and simply spray a few coats on top of what's already there. |

Usually the color transparent coats on gibson are a prayed on toner. Some of the color is mixed with the laquer. I have a les paul flame top. I believe the backs and neck of these are done this way. And so are the whole body of the cherry SG's. I have stripped a sg down and when i removed the lacquer there was hardly any color left in the wood with the exception of the colored pore filler. Gibson used to use a red tinted pore filler then switched to walnut since the red tint from the pore filler would leach into the clear coats. There is no way to strip without damaging the finish. |
