| Post subject: | KTM-9 , Z-poxy, and stain |
I am wanting to stain mahogany before applying Z-poxy and then spraying with KTM-9. Will any water based colored stain work, or is there something I need to be aware of? Also, any recommendations, or should I just go on down to the local hardware store and start guessing?  Thank you much... |

Hmm - Frankly I think you'll be alright, but I'd contact the ZPoxy folks....also calling LMI might be a possibility. They're always helpful, and pretty knowledgeable. I had some issues with Zpoxy and they set me up pretty well. |

Stain the wood, let it set 3 days. pore fill with Zpoxy, level sand BUT BE DARN SURE NOT TO SAND BACK TO THE WOOD. Now if doing a burst as apposed to a complete stain. it is far easier to fill first and spray a burst over the fill |

It takes 24 hours as per the lable for Zpoxy to fully cure so apply the first Zpoxy fill coat. allow 24 hour cure. sand near level. apply a second if needed allow 24 hour cure and repeat till pores are filled. sand level. appy a 50% alcohol/ 50% Zpoxy very thin wipped on wash coat to pop the color. Seal with 2 coats of 1# cut of shellac or your sealer of choice. |

I thought to pop the color you need to do this with a first coat - like when dying figured maple tops and such..?? Maybe not the same..?? |

Most of the pop is caused by the first coat. but when you sand back to level you add a bunch of small scratches that causes uneven reflection of the returning light rays. giving a dull appearance and an uneven color. exspecially if you sand through to the wood. the 50/50 wipe coat fill the scraches and evens the color. Up might try to search the archive on Zpoxy there is tones posts related to the wipe coat. |
