Post subject:  Resource for Instrument Restoration adivice?

Not sure where to post this question, but...
I've got a 1918 Martin mandolin (dated by serial number) that's generally in excellent shape. Its very playable in present condition. However, binding is starting to pull away from a small edge section and it generally needs cleaning. My question is whether it should be refinished at this point, or left with the original worn finish. I've put pics at: http://picasaweb.google.com/hippiedave5/MartinMandolin# . I presume that leaving the original finish is the best option, but am a bit concerned about the bare wood being exposed in places.

For cleaning it, what is recommended?

Repair and restoration practices have changed a lot over the years. Instrument repair is approaching museum-like standards where quality instruments are concerned.

With this in view, most repair work should only attempt to restore the instrument to playing condition, keeping everything as original as possible, especially the finish. It is generally agreed that any "refinishing" work will devalue the instrument by one-half.

Bare wood is not considered a fault, nor is there any danger to the instrument from bare wood.

A good repairman can fix the binding pulling away and check for any loose parts at a reasonable cost. He (or she) can also clean most dirt from the bare wood. Some good repairmen will wipe on a light coat of shellac on bare wood to keep any more dirt from the wood, but some will not recommend that.

A warm damp rag is all that is needed to remove most dirt from your mandolin. I would not recommend any chemical cleaners on your Martin, as a 1918 finish may be damaged by them.
