Post subject: | String spacing at the nut help |
Hi All, I think I'm correct when I state that most if not all of the comercial ready made bridges in the world are spaced for a standard 1 11/16" nut. I've never seen anything to make me think different. I want to make a 1 3/4" nut but would be guessing at how much width to add to the fingerboard at the 14th and how much the string spacing at the bridge increases. Does anyone have some standard numbers for 1 3/4"? Thanks! Dave |

Most store bought guitars I've measured with a 1 11/16" nut width had 2 1/8" spacing at the saddle, and 2 1/8" to 2 1/4" FB width at the body join. A bunch of store bought guitars with a 1 3/4" nut have 2 3/16" spacing at the saddle and 2 3/16" or so FB width at the body join. I'd recommend taking a tape measure to Guitar Center or any music store with alot of guitars. Play 'em, feel 'em and measure 'em. It doesn't matter if they're nice expensive guitars, or cheap entry models. You're just looking for the feel. This is what I recommend for my clients if they're not sure what they want. I usually match the body join width with the string spacing at the saddle. I've used saddle spacing as wide as 2 5/16" with a 1 11/16" nut and as narrow as 2 1/8" with a 1 13/16" nut. It's not what I wanted, it's what the person getting the guitar wanted. |

I find Martin uses 1 3/4 nut 2 1/4 at 12th and 2 1/4 at saddle and for me that is a comfortable guitar to play. The 1 11/16 nut 2 1/8 12 th and 2 1/8 saddle spacing is common on most D size Martins. Fred |
