Does anyone have one of these, or have experience with them? A good tool? I will be making a universal style binding jig and am thinking that bearing would work? Thanks! |

I built a Universal Binding fixture, and used the DeWalt trimmer. I used the LMI router bit and bearing set - rather than the Dewalt bearing. I see no reason why the DeWalt bearing would not work. With either bearing arrangement, you should run a strip of tape on the guitar side where the bearing will ride. I didn't do this, and had some marks on the side from the bearing. This required a lot of sanding to remove the marks. The pic shows how I checked the vertical alignment of the trimmer with a long drill bit and a square. Ray |

Don't know about dewalt trimmers but I do know something about that kind of bearing arrangement. They are nice because you can use a spiral bit which cuts much better than a rabbet bit. They are problematic in that the bearing is not concentric with the bit. You'll need to keep the guitar oriented so that sides stay 90 degrees to the trimmer. In other words, your depth of cut will change if you change the orientation of the sides to the bearing. |

Ray- Nice jig you have there, and I will be sure to use tape. I take it you like the trimmer? Kent- Between the advantages of the spiral downcut bit and saving a pile of money on a router bit set, is enough reason to try going this route (No pun intended ![]() I think that the point at 90 must be the maximum depth of cut right? So taking a few passes on each ledge should clear that problem... I think. |

Dewalt is owned by Black & Decker, as is Delta and Porter Cable. Having worked there (B&D Canada) in the past I know that they (B&D) will leverage the best from those companies they have acquired. I believe you will find the Dewalt trimmer is pretty much the Porter Cable 7310 in a yellow and black cloak (with a few cosmetic differences). Rick |

I use one of these in my binding jig, I use a Fleishman/Williams jig with the extra lazy susan bearing to mount the trimmer as devised by Dave White. It's done a great job for me on many guitars. I much prefer to use a downcut bit, and with this you don't risk the bearing marking the side of the guitar as it has no tendency to try and spin with the bit. I have one and I like it, but adjustments should be easier. |

Colin, I was hoping you would chime in as I saw your setup in a thread from a while back. Did you have to make any modifications to the bearing to get a deep enough cut? |

Edward, I use a 1/4" downcut bit and have plenty of adjustments for any cut I'm ever likely to want to make. All I had to do, because of the way I mount it, is to replace the knurled adjustment knob that hold the bearing assembly onto the trimmer, with a machine screw, but once it is fixed you never have to adjust it anyway. If this one failed, I'd buy another. Colin |

Thanks Colin, that is just what I wanted to hear. And your setup is real slick! |
