I just got some nice bone nuts off ebay (4/$10.00 shipped) Nice, but a 'bit' smelly if you put to your nose, just wondering if it will shrink, or if you can bake them or something to seal the size? |

Oh,.....no..............no no no... ![]() But the answer seems to be yes...at 150 degrees, one hour, 1/2 inch shrank .05 hundredths!! Smell has somewhat decreased. But we will see. The bone seemed a bit 'fresh', but perfectly cut to 1/2 inch tall |

Jeez. Im glad I decided to try the oven bake method, no one wants to talk about nuts, and shrinkage is off limits. How many 20 year olds here again? ![]() Im down to .01 shrinkage. These are off ebay, obviously not very dry, but Im thinking baking should be on the list. Not sure how LMI or Stewi mac would fair. I guess I will try for another hour... Smell is going away also.... |

Haha... that's the really sad thing... probably few to no 20 year olds around here ![]() in all seriousness, this is good info. Thanks for posting your results. Based on this, i might steer (hah!) clear of the ebay ones. adam |

Bone being a natural material is subject to cell shrinkage. How it is processed is what makes the bone stable. As Todd points out , get your bone from reputable dealers. Most stuff on Ebay is at best iffy. There are a few suppliers out there but to be honest I can buy processed bone nuts and saddle blanks cheaper off a reputable dealer than ebay. Know your source. If Bone isn't processed properly it can have an odor that will stay for a long time. The fat and other body fluids in it can let a saturation mark over time. |
