A Martin D-35 was brought to me for repair of a loose fingerboard binding at the nut.
I can easily press the binding back in place for gluing, but wonder if I should shorten the binding a bit to relieve the stress. It appears that the binding is a bit too long, and this may have caused the problem. I've always heard that the plastic binding will shrink, but apparently this was not the case

Thanks,

Ray

Ray,

Looks to me too like that caused the problem. Trim to length, should help to keep it from recurring. Popping off the nut first might make it easier if the nut hasn't been "finished over".

I would remove the nut, reglue the binding, then using the FB end as a guide, use a chisel to shave off any excess.
