(hope the pics come out ok...taken with a camera phone) ![]() These are the joined plates for the new classical I am doing. Found this incredible dark cedar at, of all places, Home Depot. The sides are from the same board, and I am thinking to use a lighter colored cedar for the top. Bracing will be fun, since it is sooooo soft! ![]() Most of the colors you see are the real thing...the odd blue-ish and green-ish tints are an iridescent effect. probably from my shop lights combined with a cheap camera. -Matthew |

I use all sorts of QS wood from the big hardware stores. Not for tops, but for building, and neckblocks, as there is always a small % of QS wood in a stack. |

I am not too proud to convert "Lumber" into "Tonewood" I haven't been lucky enough to score anything useful for Tops... but I have scored good wood for Back/Sides, bracing, and other bits and pieces. It will make a beautiful guitar! Thanks John |

Am I the only one that begins to look suspicious and possibly crazy looking at pretty much the ends of lumber. Still haven't found anything good. I get some strange looks from associates for my abnormal behavior. Even stranger looks when I tell them I'm looking for quarter sawn. |

They look at me like I've lost my mind when they see me digging thru lumber looking at the ends. Maybe I am, but it's a good crazy! ![]() |

The OLF should host a fun contest to test Luthier skills......who can build the best sounding guitar using only wood purchased at a box store. Be fun to see and play all the guitars. On problem is some areas have better wood selection than others. For instance, I've not seen spruce at my local store. |

I think you would have to do put qualifications on this... but it would be fun. I think my biggest problem would be the Fretboard -- as the local box stores don't offer any hardwoods besides Oak and Poplar... unless an Aluminum fretboard qualifies... Now... give me dumpster scrap and pallets... and I am IN! Thanks John |
