Finish question for those in the nitro know! I pulled the tape on my beautiful macassar fretboard and got a little lazy (never good) and I pulled/bubbled a small peice of nitro on the side of the board. Players side!! Argggg... Being my first finish repair, and probably not the last, I planned on touching up the area with a small hobbiest brush and re-buffing. My concerns are what I should do to prep the repair area, how many coats, length of time before I rebuff, and why I'm so addicted to such a frustrating hobby???? Thanks and have a great weekend! Build up enough lacquer so that you have it higher than the adjacent finish. This will take several coats; how many depends on the thickness of your finish and how thickly you apply the touch up. Let it dry as long as you can stand because it will continue to shrink for 2 to 4 weeks. Scrape it almost level with a razor blade. Then sand and buff. |

Ray .. make some toich up lac ... put some into a mason jar, lid open for a coupole days. it will gas off and get really thick. Thus when you drop fill it wont sink as much as there are now more solids in that lac batch. Leave it a few days, the level and hand polish (less heat than a buffer, less shrinkage) It happens, i have to do that myself sometimes. I also use it to fill gaps/pits/unfilled pores when putting the finish on a guitar in the first place. |
