New to the forum. Have been making a few guitars (16) over the past 6 years. One of my first custom strats has lost most of its deep blue. LMII alcohol dyes with clear coats of lacquer. Some times in sun filled room, some times in case. Any experiences like this? Thanks much. Attachment: UV problems.jpg Attachment: UV problems.jpg

Same issue here Willy. If you always keep it in the case, the color will last a lot longer. I used the same Mohawk blue as the Chinery guitars, mixed into the finish and got significant fading after a couple of years leaving it on a stand. I've just started the refinish process. I always use lacquer. Perhaps other finishes like polyester are less prone? |

Welcome to the forum Willie! I'm not a finish Guru by any strech. I do know that cat. polyurethane clear used in automotive finishes does contain UV stabilizers. It seems like a fairly easy system to use and I'll be trying it soon. I'm not sure about the cat. polyester. I'm sure someone with real answers will be along soon. Steve |

Willy, Great looking guitar. It is really sad when a beautiful blue axe turns green. Hopefully someone will say how to prevent this. (I can imagine how much work it will to fix it.) I'll be interested what others say. Joe |

Willy Wailer wrote: What other colors fade?? thanks With out UV protection, the sun turns red pale, black becomes purple, all the blues fade. Just about all the colors fade to some degree. Joe |

the sun does weird things ... I have an electric I made , carved top BC Rich Eagle shaped, fninshed in nitro with the LMI metal acid dyes from years ago, it was finsihed about 5 years ago .. it was a deep indigo blue (I still have the original stain in the jar too, rich blue colour) - yet the guitar is now a purplish blue ... almost a PRS purple. very weird. Didnt really fade .. actually changed ... |
