Hey folks. We are about ready to introduce a new template product with several useful features. We are producing precision made body templates for our OLF OM, SJ, and MJ plans. These templates are cut to the actual dimensions of the plans and are slotted to help you locate the center of the sound hole and the brace positioning – AND – we have also installed two locating pins on center outside the pattern to help you modify your molds to align your top and back plate during glue up. Now, there is no more worry about the plate sliding off of center while you are clamping it up. With the registration pins you are sure to get a simple, accurate glue up every time. Additionally with this template you can begin to create other tools and jigs. For instance: *You could modify a radius dish to hold the plate on center and have registration pins to help you locate your back braces perfectly and accurately every time. *You could create a lexan template that uses the registration pins that will help you notch the top and back braces *And many other useful tools. This system will (probably) work with your existing molds, is on the money accurate, and has hardened steel drill bushings installed for long life. Brock and I both use tooling similar to this for our own building and it has helped to shave HOURS off of every build and reduced the chance of error for every guitar. These templates are made from 1/16th" Polycarbonate with 2 hardened drill bushings installed. They are $31.99 each plus shipping of $13.00 (we had to order special boxes for them). Like the Fretboard template’s we recently made we need to have a minimum quantity of 50 per style to make it economical enough to have these CNC cut. We anticipate that we will be ordering these around the end of August or first half of September. If you want one be sure and order it now. Lance and Brock, These are very cool, and a good deal! For the money and time that it takes to make polycarbonate templates, and the accuracy that these will provide, these will become a very valuable tool for everyone that makes these body styles. Dennis |

Hi Everyone. I just ordered the three piece set. I noted for Lance that I would sure like to see a 12 fret Slope Dreadnought in the inventory someday. While I am doing mostly Les Paul 59 Burst Replicas, I am re-entering the acoustic build world too. The slope dread has always been my favorite shape - it handles more like an OOO/OM as far as ergonomics and the factory ones I have owned have had a satisfyingly robust tone character. I think they have eye appeal, as well. I would be in luthier heaven if I had such a template. With John Hall's patient and as always friendly help, I am going to do a slope, 12 string and 12 fret to body-I have one of John's fine molds for it. I have had it well over a year before getting the courage to get back into the acoustic water where I feel like a guppy among the Siamese Fighting Fish. But I have been saving back a set of Zoot Imbuia for just such a project. I fired up completing my OM walnut /sitka -with health forced retirement, luthierie was the only thing I could think of to engage me and, perhaps, after proving myself, to supplement my Social Security. I see many new names and I hope you folks will enjoy having me around on a more regular basis. Age has only made me a bit more ornery, but I will control myself. I am eager and excited, but at the same time apprehensive. I am sure I will have questions.Mike T. I |

Lance. I am still new to this game that I do not recognize what models you are offering? I these models viewable/attached to any other design on the net I might be able to relate too at LMI or Stew Mac. I have a Martin OOO mold I got from RC; do any of these relate to that one? Mike Mcnerney |

Mike, For right now, the templates that the forum is offering are specifically for the OLF SJ, MJ, and OM drawn by the amazing Michael Payne and up for sale at StewMac. Lance would eventually like to add some standard versions of the dred, and probably the OOO as well, because all will eventually interface with numerous jigs that will indicate off of the locating bushings. I am sure he will jump in here, but he is still out in CA observing the incredible scenery. Stephen |

These sound nice, but why is it that templates for tops are available (in general) but you don't frequently see templates for the sides? For the OMs I've built (...working on #5) I was able to trace the sides of my Martin OM-21. For the other shapes, I don't have an existing example to trace. ...am I missing something? |

Most templates offered - if they have bracing spacing, will allow you to quickly and easily mark all the bracing locations: a task that is very time consuming to say the least. I imagine side templates are not offered typically because many people just size them to the lower bout dimension, and then profile them with their bowl sanders - as opposed to profiling the sides to start. However, on certain plans - such as the OLF plan series, the sides are spec'd out with a full scale template. Stephen |

I believe they are variants on a Jumbo Theme (i.e Small Jumbo and Medium Jumbo), although I am just guessing.

If you buy all three, we can credit your shipping 13.00 and bill you for the diff. How does that sound? |

Lance, I completed the Paypal transaction. Checks in the mail. I was blogging on the Kit Builders Forum this week, and posted a question to that group about finding a template that would work for the OLF OM. I got a variety of answers back. One said that the paper that the blueprints are printed on will shrink and distort the drawing. Another said that none of them are the same, etc. I figured I was going to have to make my own, and then I saw your post. Just in time to save me a lot of effort cutting my own. Thanks for doing that. I have a template that matches the Scott Antes parlor guitar that I bought from KMG. Matches perfectly. If you get some made, post some pics and demensions of the SJ and MJ when you can. I may consider one of them in the near future. Thanks, Mike R. |
