I have a couple madagascar rosewood sets with large areas of perfectly, textbook flatsawn grain  wile the rest is not fabulous either. I wonder if laminating a thin layer of light Engelmann or cedar might help prevent the possible cracks. I also feel the end result could have a better stiffness/weight ratio. It is a technique used in some old romantic guitars, old Martins, and by some classical makers today... |

ah .. its no good .. send it to me and I will dispose of it properly. Lots of wood has that character, doesnt mean it will crack, just thats its more likely than quartered. I see no reason not to use it if it has been properly dried .... I give a wash coat to all my mad rw, braz rw, ziricote, any ebony and coco with thin CA prior to pore filling, and sand back ( a trick from Larrivee on brw) - it should be fine. |
