hi guys tomas here just had a random thought about this the other day Does or did anyone ever use a tuning fork for voicing or selecting their woods or even to test saddle fit/ saddle material on any instruments ? |

sorry forgot to mention (bad internet) When your voicing your top aswell as searching for the sweet spot wouldnt it make sense if you put the tuning fork where the bridge is so you hear the sound from where the strings are goin to be logically it should louder or more defined when your getting closer ? im only a novice and i havent tried it yet though it sounded cool through my friends classical i just thought it was intresting anyway thanks . |

I met a luthier in Spain who did that many years ago. He would run a tuning fork around on the top, and put braces on the loud spots. I suppose that could help that note out, but it does seem to me that you want the guitar to work well on a whole lot of notes. You'd need to do it with a whole lot of different tuning forks, and figure out which, out of all the loud spots, would be the best places to add bracing. Anyway, there's nothing new under the sun. |

Sorry if this seems a hijack, but it is about voicing, though not with a tuning fork, and it seems to relate. Alan, have you seen this little video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7x-qUdM ... re=related I have watched it a few times, and it seems fascinating, but I'm not sure what he is getting at. Do you "get it"? |

Sorry, David: I'm on dial-up. Videos turn out to be three minutes of download, then ten seconds of video, and another three minutes of download. |

Find someone with a better connection, Alan. That's interesting stuff. |

Seems to me that streu is feeling where the "bellies" are in his terminology, which I think corresponds to the anti-modes that we're accustomed to seeing when we use Chladni patterns to find out where the stiffness is. By passing his hand across the plate when striking a string, he's sensing where it's vibrating, the equivalent of those areas where there is no glitter (or sawdust, or what have you). In parts of the video, you can hear the "wah-wah" that he talks about, areas which are getting damped as his hand passes across them. Pat |
